Professor, M.D. Alessandro Marroni

Professor Alessandro Marroni is one of the leading experts in diving and hyperbaric medicine and a pioneer in the study of human safety in extreme environments.

He is the Founder and President of DAN Europe (Divers Alert Network Europe) and a Director of International DAN, coordinating global initiatives in diving safety, medical assistance and scientific research. With over fifty years of experience, Professor Marroni has contributed to the development of modern diving safety standards through research on decompression physiology, risk management and diver health monitoring. He founded the Diving Safety Laboratory, one of the largest diving research databases in the world, collecting so far more than 150,000 dive profiles to support evidence-based safety protocols. Earlier in his career he served as Medical Director of the Commercial and Saturation Diving Company Saipem (ENI Group) and was the medical officer during Jacques Mayol’s world-record free dive in 1973. Professor Marroni has authored more than 250 scientific publications and internationally recognised books in diving medicine. His contributions have been recognised with numerous international awards including the Tridente d’Oro, the Craig Hoffman Memorial Award and the Levanchy Award.

Title: "Beyond the DAN Europe 2025 DCS Risk Epidemiological Analysis. A roadmap towards Personalized Decompression”.

After discussing (in depth) the results of the recently published ( Jan 2026) DAN Europe Epidemiological Analysis  on  127K+ Dives and 628 DCS Cases, identifying 12 independent risk factors, both non-modifiable and modifiable by the diver and the recent findings about physiological variables monitored during the dives, I will discuss the application of the available epidemiological data,  the observed physiological changes before, during and after diving and the progress of the DAN Probabilistic Physiological Model (DPPM) for Personalized Decompression.
