The Malin Head region off the north coast of Ireland is widely regarded as one of the world’s premier destinations for technical wreck diving. The area hosts an exceptional concentration of historic wrecks, ranging from well-known “classic” ships and deep-water liners to military vessels and German U-boats scuttled during Operation Deadlight, many of them resting at depths of up to 185 metres.
This presentation explores recent dives and observations from the Malin Head area, highlighting a wide spectrum of wreck types and depth ranges, including identified historic sites and still unknown or unidentified wrecks. Particular attention is given to deep and extended range diving techniques required to safely access these sites, as well as the environmental challenges characteristic of the region.
A key focus is placed on underwater documentation and photography as an essential element of modern wreck exploration. Topics include camera systems suitable for extreme depths, lighting strategies for large wreck structures and submarines, and efficient underwater and post-dive workflows for documentation, analysis, and identification.
